Service Learning at West

Serving our community provides an opportunity for VHEW to put hands and feet to The West Way.  Service projects are sponsored both schoolwide and through individual classes and groups. We host an annual canned food drive, the Girls on the Run team plans an annual service project, and our third graders pack meals for children in need.

Fifth graders can apply to be a Student Ambassador at West (SAW). This team provides student leadership and service in many areas, such as safety patrol, peer helpers, library helpers, and morning greeters.

To highlight our core value of kindness, we surveyed fourth grade students, 67% wanted to find a way to serve people in need and the West MASKerade was born. We collected t-shirts and students made them into no-sew masks by practicing measuring standards. Older students met with younger students to help make masks. Students practiced the standard of letter writing, thanking community helpers for their hard work during the pandemic.
